Breed guide
Nili Ravi buffalo: the complete guide
Yield, fat percentage, gestation, calving interval, what to look for when buying, and what a good one costs.
The breed
The Nili Ravi is Pakistan's principal dairy buffalo and, by milk contributed, arguably the most economically important dairy animal in the country. It comes from the Sutlej and Ravi river valleys of central Punjab — the Nili and the Ravi were separate breeds until they were merged in the 1960s.
It is recognisable: jet black, wall eyes, white markings on the forehead, muzzle, legs and tail switch — the panj kalyan five-white pattern that buyers pay a premium for, though it has nothing to do with milk.
The numbers
What a Nili Ravi actually does
| Trait | Typical | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Lactation yield | 1,800–2,500 L | Well-managed commercial herds reach 3,000 L and above |
| Lactation length | 280–305 days | |
| Peak daily yield | 12–18 L | Elite animals exceed 25 L |
| Fat | 6.0–7.5% | Roughly double crossbred cow milk — the reason it commands a premium |
| SNF | 9.0–10.0% | |
| Gestation | 305–315 days | About a month longer than a cow — the single most common software error |
| Age at first calving | 40–48 months | Late, and the main economic weakness of the breed |
| Calving interval | 450–550 days | Target is under 450; over 500 is costing you a calf crop |
| Mature weight | 450–800 kg | Males heavier |
What to check
Buying one
Udder and teats
Well-attached udder, four functional quarters, teats of even length and placement. Check each quarter draws milk. A blind quarter is a permanent 25% cut in the animal's value that a seller will not mention.
Actual records, not claims
Ask for the previous lactation yield, the calving date and the service date. A seller with no records is selling you an unknown, and the price should reflect that. Yield claims at a market are almost always peak yield quoted as if it were average.
Stage of lactation
A freshly calved animal in her second or third lactation is the sweet spot. Buy in the first month after calving so you see what she actually gives.
Age
Check the teeth. Second and third lactation animals are usually the best value; a first-calver is unproven and a sixth-lactation animal has a short remaining career.
Temperament
Buffalo are handled at close quarters twice a day. An animal that will not stand for milking without her calf present is a real operational cost, and this is worth watching for before you buy.
Price
A good milking Nili Ravi in Punjab typically runs PKR 250,000–450,000 depending on lactation number, current yield and markings. Show-quality animals with strong pedigree go far higher and are not a dairy purchase.
The two things that cost Nili Ravi owners money
Silent heat. Buffalo show heat far less obviously than cattle, especially in summer, and much of it happens at night. Missed heats are the main reason calving intervals stretch past 500 days. Twice-daily observation at quiet times, and a recorded service history you can actually look at, are worth more than any hormone.
Late first calving. Forty-eight months of feeding before an animal earns anything is a large sunk cost. Better heifer nutrition brings it toward 40 months, and that difference compounds across every replacement you raise.
Both are records problems as much as husbandry problems: neither is visible without per-animal breeding history.
Questions
Common questions
How many months is a Nili Ravi buffalo pregnant?
Around 310 days, or roughly ten months and one week — about a month longer than a cow. Kundi runs slightly longer at up to 315 days.
How much milk does a Nili Ravi buffalo give per day?
Peak daily yield is typically 12–18 litres, with elite animals above 25. Average across a full lactation is considerably lower, usually 60–70% of peak.
What is the fat percentage of Nili Ravi milk?
Between 6.0% and 7.5%, roughly double crossbred cow milk, which is why buffalo milk earns a premium under fat-based pricing.
What does a good Nili Ravi cost?
A sound milking animal in Punjab is typically PKR 250,000–450,000 depending on lactation number, current yield and markings, as of September 2026.
