Free dairy farm management software — what's actually free
A straight answer, because most pages that rank for this question are not giving you one.
Detail
The honest version
What Lactra gives free, permanently
Up to 20 animals and one user. Herd records, breeding, health, milk recording and the offline Android app. No expiry, no card, no feature nagging. If you never outgrow it, that is a fine outcome.
What the 30-day trial adds
Everything else, including feed, inventory, accounting and analyzer integration if you have the hardware. After 30 days you drop to the free plan — nothing is deleted.
The free Excel template
A working herd and milk register. Download it, use it forever, never speak to us. No signup form.
About the other “free” options
Most results for free dairy software download are unmaintained Windows desktop tools, often a decade old, with no support, no backup, no mobile app and no way to get your data out if the machine dies. Several are abandoned final-year student projects. A few are trials with the word “free” in the title.
And open source
There is no credible open-source dairy herd management system. We looked properly. farmOS is the closest — a solid Drupal-based farm records platform with animal assets, movement logs and medical logs — but it has no milk production records, no lactation model and no reproduction cycle, which is most of what a dairy actually needs. Building the dairy domain on top of it is a project, not a download.
If someone tells you otherwise, ask them to name it.
