Choosing a milk analyzer

Accuracy, speed, calibration burden and price — and why the analyzer you buy quietly determines the software you can use with it.

What an analyzer is actually for

An ultrasonic milk analyzer reads fat, SNF, density, protein, lactose and added water from a small sample in 30 to 60 seconds. Gerber, the legal reference method, is more accurate at ±0.1% but takes 15 to 20 minutes for a batch and needs sulphuric acid, a centrifuge and a trained hand.

At a collection centre with forty farmers queuing, the choice is not really about accuracy. It is that a queue moving at Gerber speed does not move at all.

The field

The three you will actually be offered

DeviceReadsTimeIndicative priceCharacter
Ekomilk (Bulgaria)Fat, SNF, density, added water, temperature~40 sPKR 250k–450kThe most common in Pakistani centres. Rugged, widely serviced, parts available locally.
Lactoscan (Bulgaria)Fat, SNF, density, protein, lactose, salts, added water, pH on some models~30–60 sPKR 300k–600kMore parameters and more model variants. Popular where protein is priced.
Milkotester (Bulgaria)Fat, SNF, density, protein, lactose, added water~40–60 sPKR 200k–450kUsually the cheapest of the three; several entry-level models aimed at village centres.

Prices are indicative landed cost as of September 2026 and move with the exchange rate. Confirm with a local distributor before budgeting.

Buying

What to check before you buy

Does it have a serial output?

This is the question most buyers never ask and the one that matters most later. A device with an RS232 or USB-serial port can feed readings straight into software; a device without one means an operator reading a number off a screen and typing it in, which is exactly the transcription error you bought the machine to avoid.

Calibration burden

Every ultrasonic analyzer drifts and needs periodic calibration against a reference. Ask how often, whether it can be done on site, what it costs, and who does it in your district. A machine that must go to Lahore for a week twice a year is a different proposition from one calibrated in an afternoon.

Service and parts

The peristaltic pump and the measuring chamber are consumables. Confirm local availability before you buy, not after the pump fails in July.

Sample temperature range

Most models want the sample between about 5°C and 40°C. Milk straight off a buffalo in June sits above that, and readings taken outside the range are simply wrong.

Cleaning routine

Daily alkaline and acid cleaning cycles are not optional. A chamber with milk residue reads high on fat and the errors accumulate silently over weeks.

The point most buyers miss

An analyzer removes the testing error. It does not remove the transcription error, the rate lookup error, or the payout arithmetic error — and those three are where the money and the arguments actually are.

The value of the device roughly doubles when the software reads it directly: the number goes into the record untouched, the rate chart applies itself, and the raw reading is retained next to the value used, so a dispute is settled by looking rather than by remembering.

Questions

Common questions

Is an electronic analyzer accurate enough to pay farmers on?

Yes, and it is standard practice across the industry. It is less accurate than Gerber — typically ±0.15% on fat against Gerber ±0.1% — but it is consistent, fast, and far less prone to operator error than acid testing under time pressure.

How often does it need calibrating?

Most manufacturers say every six to twelve months, and more often if the machine is moved, dropped or run outside its temperature range. Check monthly against a known reference sample; drift is gradual and invisible without one.

Do I need one to start a collection centre?

No, but a Gerber-only centre cannot clear a queue at 6am. Most centres above about 200 litres a day end up buying one within the first year.

Which should I buy?

If you have no strong preference, buy whichever of the three has the best service presence in your district and confirm it has a serial port. Local support matters more than the specification sheet.

Make the device earn its price

Lactra reads fat and SNF straight off the analyzer, applies your rate chart, and stores the raw reading beside the value used.
